Lies Women Believe, Chapter 1

I started reading Lies Women Believe a couple weeks ago for our women’s Bible study at church.  I am amazed at how the truths Nancy Leigh DeMoss wrote in 2001 coincide with what Lysa wrote in 2010 in Made to Crave.  I always do need to hear His Truth a few times before it sinks in, right?

Each chapter of this book, Nancy writes a diary entry from the perspective of Eve in the Garden of Eden.  It is so insightful!

As Eve, Nancy writes about the thoughts that must have passed through Eve’s mind before, during, and after her encounter with the Serpent.  “Satan’s objective was to drive a wedge between God and His creatures…He knew that…he would have to subtly trick then, to deceive them, to seduce them by making an offer that appeared to be reasonable, desirable, and not entirely ‘anti-God'” (page 30).  He frequently uses half-truths or falsehoods disguised as truth.

There is a progression to these lies.  First, we listen to them.  Second, we dwell on them.  Third, we believe the lies.  And fourth, we act on the lies.  This progression leads us into bondage!  So how do we break free from the chains?

First, we have to identify the areas of bondage or sinful behaviors in which we are trapped.  Then, we have to identify the lie or lies at the root of the problem.  Third, we have to replace the lies with God’s Truth.  This last step is what truly sets us free, as Jesus shared in John 8:32.

So why do we fall victim so easily to these lies of Satan?  In 2 Corinthians 11, Paul writes, “I wish you would bear with me in a little foolishness. Do bear with me! For I feel a divine jealousy for you, since I betrothed you to one husband, to present you as a pure virgin to Christ. But I am afraid that as the serpent deceived Eve by his cunning, your thoughts will be led astray from a sincere and pure devotion to Christ. For if someone comes and proclaims another Jesus than the one we proclaimed, or if you receive a different spirit from the one you received, or if you accept a different gospel from the one you accepted, you put up with it readily enough. Indeed, I consider that I am not in the least inferior to these super-apostles. Even if I am unskilled in speaking, I am not so in knowledge; indeed, in every way we have made this plain to you in all things.Or did I commit a sin in humbling myself so that you might be exalted, because I preached God’s gospel to you free of charge? I robbed other churches by accepting support from them in order to serve you. And when I was with you and was in need, I did not burden anyone, for the brothers who came from Macedonia supplied my need. So I refrained and will refrain from burdening you in any way. As the truth of Christ is in me, this boasting of mine will not be silenced in the regions of Achaia. And why? Because I do not love you? God knows I do!And what I am doing I will continue to do, in order to undermine the claim of those who would like to claim that in their boasted mission they work on the same terms as we do. For such men are false apostles, deceitful workmen, disguising themselves as apostles of Christ. And no wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. So it is no surprise if his servants, also, disguise themselves as servants of righteousness. Their end will correspond to their deeds.”

He twists and turns the Truth, taking it in bits and pieces and filling in the gaps left with his lies.  Everything appears either to be true or to fill something in our lives that is missing.  He likes to promise wholeness, and then leaves us even emptier than before.

Here is where we can connect back to Made to Crave:  when faced with a temptation, a choice, an opportunity, ask the question, “Is this permissible?  If it is, will it be beneficial for my health, physically and/or spiritually?”  What does Scripture say about this?

The more we are in the Word of God, the easier it will be to identify the lies Satan throws at us.  The more in the Word we are, the more we are able to submit to the Holy Spirit and the strength therein to wield the Shield of Faith with which we can extinguish those flaming darts.

So let’s be IN THE TRUTH so that we may RECOGNIZE the TRUTH!  Amen!
